Eddy Current Separator: The Final Quality Gate for High-Purity Plastic Recycling

Turn Contaminated Plastic Flakes into Premium Recyclable Material

In modern plastic recycling plants, even a small amount of aluminum, copper, or metal contamination can significantly reduce the value of recycled plastic flakes and pellets.

An Eddy Current Separator (ECS) is specifically designed to solve this challenge.

Installed after magnetic separation, the ECS automatically removes non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, and stainless steel fragments, ensuring cleaner plastic flakes, better pellet quality, and higher profits.

How Does an Eddy Current Separator Work?

Step 1 – Mixed Material Feeding

Mixed materials containing plastic flakes and metal contaminants are evenly fed onto the conveyor.

Typical materials include:

✓ PET bottle flakes
✓ PP HDPE flakes
✓ Aluminum fragments
✓ Copper wire pieces
✓ Iron and steel particles

Step 2 – Magnetic Drum Removes Ferrous Metals

The first separation stage uses a permanent magnetic drum.

Ferrous metals such as:

  • Iron
  • Steel
  • Magnetic stainless steel

are attracted and discharged into a dedicated collection bin.

Result:

Mixed material becomes:

Plastic Flakes + Non-Ferrous Metals

This prepares the material for high-efficiency eddy current separation.

Step 3 – High-Speed Eddy Current Rotor Creates Repulsive Force

The remaining material enters the Eddy Current Separator.

Inside the drum, a high-speed magnetic rotor generates a rapidly alternating magnetic field.

When conductive metals pass through this field:

  1. Eddy currents are induced inside the metal particles.
  2. These currents generate their own magnetic field.
  3. The interaction creates a powerful repulsive force.

Step 4 – Non-Ferrous Metals Are Thrown Forward

The separation effect is easy to visualize:

Aluminum & Copper

  • Conductive
  • Repelled by the magnetic field
  • Thrown forward in a long parabolic trajectory

Plastic Flakes

  • Non-conductive
  • Unaffected by magnetic forces
  • Fall naturally by gravity

Ferrous Metals

  • Already removed by the magnetic drum

The result is a clean three-way separation.
