Zig Zag Air Separator for HDPE Flakes and Paper Label Separation

Amstar zig zag air separator with cyclone in the factory

The Zig Zag Air Separator, also known as a Zig Zag Air Classifier, is designed to remove lightweight contaminants such as paper labels, plastic films, and dust from heavier plastic flakes. It is widely used in plastic recycling lines to improve the purity of recycled materials.

In this video, we demonstrate the separation of HDPE flakes mixed with paper labels: the upward airflow carries the lightweight labels away while the heavier HDPE flakes fall to the bottom. Machine page: Zig-Zag Air Classifier.

How Does the Zig Zag Air Separator Work?

The machine uses an upward airflow inside a zig-zag separation chamber to separate materials based on their aerodynamic properties.

  • Lightweight materials, such as paper labels and films, are carried upward by the airflow and discharged through the upper outlet.
  • Heavier materials, such as HDPE flakes, fall downward under gravity and are collected from the bottom outlet.

This process provides efficient separation without using water.

Adjustable Airflow for Better Separation

The Zig Zag Air Separator features an adjustable side air inlet that allows operators to control the additional airflow. Moving the adjustment downward increases the air supply, helping optimize separation performance for different materials and contamination levels.

HDPE Flakes and Paper Label Separation Test

The mixed material is fed into the Zig Zag Air Separator, where the upward airflow carries the lightweight paper labels away while the heavier HDPE flakes fall to the bottom. The two materials are discharged separately, demonstrating the machine’s ability to remove lightweight contaminants from recycled HDPE flakes.

Ideal for Plastic Recycling Applications

The Zig Zag Air Separator can be integrated into various plastic recycling systems, including:

By removing lightweight impurities, the Zig Zag Air Separator helps improve recycled plastic purity and supports more efficient downstream processing.
